The REES Remembers

We’re celebrating two anniversaries this month! To commemorate these milestones, we will be showing two movies important to REES history.

This month marks 83 years since the first “blockbuster” movie was shown at The REES in 1940. That blockbuster was none other than Oscar-winner Gone with the Wind. This film played shortly after Stewart and Opal Rees built and opened the theatre with seating for 600.

It has also been 22 years since the premiere of Best Man in Grass Creek in April 2001. The film was shot in and around Fulton County and many locals appear in the film. The romantic comedy had a premiere at The REES and in Rochester.

Spotlight

This month, our spotlight is shining on our Director of Artistic and Educational Programming and Community Event Coordinator, Kathryn Anders! Kathryn joined the REES in a full-time capacity in December 2022 and we’re so grateful that she’s on our team! Keep reading for an interview with Kathryn conducted by Morgan Garrison.

Morgan: How long have you been involved with the REES? What made you want to get involved?

Kathryn: I received a call from Charlotte Tyree asking if she could pass along my contact information for the improv grand opening event. I said certainly and then proceeded to meet with a representative from The REES. The rest is history. I feel like all of my various jobs and volunteering has lead me to succeed in this venue!

M: What REES related accomplishment are you most proud of?

K: I am very excited about two aspects: The diverse programming being brought into this community space as well as the addition of various community theater opportunities. The murder mystery that was held in January sold out in three weeks. It is a huge indicator that Marshall County is craving a creative outlet for children as well as adults.

M: What other organizations/events are you involved in around our community? (I want to plug all the other amazing stuff you do!)

K: I had the pleasure of restarting the speech program for Warsaw Community High School. Within this Indiana Speech Association (ISSDA), I am on the executive board, interp committee, and coach education committee. I am also vice president of the Wagon Wheel Community Theater Leadership Committee. Within this organization, I have been involved with several theater productions, on and off the stage.

M: What has been your favorite REES event to date? What April event are you most looking forward to?

K: My favorite REES event scheduled is Todd Oliver and his Talking Dog Irving on April 22nd. Not only is he scheduled for two great shows at The REES, he is also visiting all of the Plymouth elementary schools to perform for the kiddos. I have been looking forward to seeing his cute dog!
