Rees is the Word: April 2024

Coming Attractions

“Forever Plaid” is coming to The REES Theatre in downtown Plymouth, IN for four performances in June.

Once upon a time, four guys who loved to sing finally made it out of their basement and landed a paying gig on February 9, 1964. Unfortunately, while en route to pick up their custom-made plaid tuxedos, Sparky, Smudge, Jinx, and Frankie were in their cherry-red 1954 Mercury convertible when they were slammed broadside by a school bus filled with eager Catholic teens on their way to witness the Beatles make their U.S. television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. The teens miraculously escaped injury, but the members of Forever Plaid were killed instantly.

It is at that moment, when their careers and lives ended, that the story of Forever Plaid begins. Through the power of harmony, expanding holes in the ozone layer, the alignment of the planets, and other astro-technical stuff, they are allowed to come back to perform the show they never got to do in life.

After having completed their Mission of Harmony, our men in plaid must return to the cosmos. Hopefully, through this production, their dreams will live on forever! Local talent and repeat performers on The REES stage include Braeden Baker (Jinx), Josh Hill (Smudge), Avery Charles (Frankie), and Sean Hatfield (Sparky).

According to director Kathryn Anders, “This production is packed full of slapstick comedy and harmonic perfection. While you move your feet to the beat, you cannot help but laugh at this four-member, doo-wop - or should I say doo-flop - show. This will prove to be a performance you won’t want to miss.”

Performances are Thursday, June 6 at 2 PM; Friday, June 7 at 7:30 PM; Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, June 9 at 2 PM.

Tickets are $20 for general admission or $40 for balcony seating and can be purchased at reestheatre.com, Fernbaugh’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, or at the door.

Summer Theater Workshops at The REES

Registration is now open for two summer theater workshops at The REES, 100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Starting Monday, July 8, The REES will run workshops for fourth through sixth graders and junior high/high school students. All students will need to bring a sack lunch and dress comfortably.

The elementary age day camps will run for one week each and the highlight will be a public performance on the Bob Pickell Stage at The REES. Students will have the rare opportunity to learn how to work as a member of an ensemble, develop a character, refine acting skills, analyze a play, and learn about backstage and technical aspects of putting on a performance.

The camp is for students who have finished the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. The first session will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12. The second session will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19.

Each session will finish with a 3 p.m. free public performance on Friday at The REES in downtown Plymouth. Each camp week will have a different curriculum, so students may attend both weeks if slots are available.

The junior high/high school session will run July 8 through July 12 and July 15 through July 19, and will also cover working as an ensemble, developing a character, refining acting skills, and learning technical and backstage aspects of a production.

In addition to attending the daily 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. sessions, the junior high/high school summer camp attendees will need to attend three evening technical rehearsals and four public performances. The performance will include a full production of Miss Nelson is Missing.

The play’s overview is as follows:

Miss Nelson cannot control her crazy classroom because she’s just too nice. But when she disappears, her replacement is the hard-as-nails, detention-loving, recess-canceling, homework-overloading substitute teacher Viola Swamp! With the “Big Test” approaching, the kids suddenly realize how much they miss Miss Nelson and they’ll do anything -- including hiring a private eye -- to solve the mystery of her disappearance and bring her back.

The Miss Nelson is Missing performances will take place on July 25th at 2 PM, July 26th at 7:30PM, July 27th at 7:30 PM, and July 28th at 2 PM. Tickets for each performance will be $5 and will be available at The REES website.

A limited number of slots are available for each theatrical workshop. Registration is now open on The REES website (reestheatre.com). For more information, contact Kathryn Anders (574-337-7337).

If you’ve already experienced an event at The REES, you know how truly unique and versatile the space is. There have been movies, musical performances, private parties and live theater performances.

Together, we have created something special that will greatly enhance our quality of place for future generations to experience and enjoy.

Sustaining this legacy is important to all of us.

This legacy includes the necessity for community sponsorships to offset the cost associated with our versatile programming. These sponsorships present unique visibility opportunities, such as playbill promotions and specialized recognition in the hands of patrons throughout the year.

Corporate show sponsors appear in our playbill, on the marquee, posters of individualized events, and a presence in any radio, newspaper and internet coverage as well.

We also work with businesses to create equal trades on promotions for a variety of products and services. Our partnerships are not one-size-fits-all as we like to personalize them around your interests.

If you have any questions, we would be more than happy to meet with you to discuss options on how your businesses can partner with the community when you support The REES.
